Comic Relief: Kansas SAAC Hosts Eighth Annual JayRock

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas student-athletes can run fast, jump high, hit a ball, perform acrobatic stunts – and for many, a combination of each – but Wednesday night at the Kansas Union, the Jayhawks put their athletic talents aside and focused on a night of comedy at the eighth-annual JayRock.

Kansas softball took home top honors at this year’s event, performing “It’s Raining Men” with the help of the baseball team and a rhythmic gymnastics routine. There was plenty of Twitter chatter surrounding the event, with the soccer team video receiving strong support as a crowd favorite along with track and field in the social media space. Each team was encouraged to do a live skit or shoot a video, with Saturday Night Live as the theme for 2013, however, teams must perform live to be eligible for first place.

Rowing took second place at JayRock with their takeoff of the classic SNL skit featuring Blue Oyster Cult and the cowbell, after raised the most money and winning top honors a year ago with the team’s “Super Mario Bros.” act.

JayRock is a student-athlete variety show put on by the Kansas Athletics Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), with donations collected at the door for a designated charity. This year’s funds raised went to The Shelter, Inc. Current Kansas basketball analyst and former player Greg Gurley served as the master of ceremonies.

Since its inception in 2006, JayRock has steadily gained momentum as one of the best things about being a Jayhawk. For the first three years, the bragging rights for JayRock victory were contained within the confines of Kansas Athletics.
