KU Women's Golf to Open Spring Competition in Mexico

Feb. 2, 2007

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

After four months off, the University of Kansas women’s golf team will leave the cold weather behind to begin its spring season in Ensenada, Mexico, at the Baja Invitational, Feb. 5-6. The tournament, hosted by Northern Illinois and Southern Mississippi, will be played at the Bajamar golf course and features three rounds – two on Monday and the final 18 holes on Tuesday.

Senior Amanda Costner, junior Annie Giangrosso and freshmen Meghan Gockel, Emily Powers and Camilla Svensson will be representing the Jayhawks during competition.

“We are looking forward to getting in some warmer temperatures,” head coach Erin O’Neil said. “I think it will be good for us to get started early this year. The main thing we will need to remember is that this is not a race, but a marathon. Our goal will be to take it one shot at a time and stay patient.”

The 15-team field includes Birmingham-Southern, Boise State, Colorado, Kansas State, Kentucky, Louisville, Memphis, North Texas, Oral Roberts, Oregon, UAB, UC-Riverside, UNC-Greensboro, Southern Mississippi and Texas Tech. Northern Illinois and Southern Mississippi will not be competing.
