Kansas Wins Easily, 81-53, in Final Big 12 Regular-Season Game Against Colorado

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Sophomore Carolyn Davis scored a team-high 22 points, while senior Krysten Boogaard eclipsed the 1,000 career-point mark in Kansas’ 81-53 victory over Colorado at Allen Fieldhouse Wednesday night. The 28-point margin came within two points of KU’s largest victory over a Big 12 opponent, as the record is a 79-49 win against Baylor on Jan. 11, 1997.

Freshman Keena Mays posted a career-high 16 points in addition to five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Sophomore Monica Engelman added 14 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists, while senior Krysten Boogaard scored eight points to give her 1,005 in her career. Boogaard also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.

Kansas improved its record to 15-7 overall and 2-6 against Big 12 opponents. CU fell to 11-10, including 2-6 in Big 12 play. The victory gave KU four-straight wins against Colorado to conclude the 67-game conference series between the two teams, as the Buffaloes leave the Big 12 following this season. Kansas now leads the all-time series, 34-33, against Colorado.

Freshman Brittany Wilson led the Buffaloes with 22 points and three assists, while senior Brittany Spears contributed 18 points and a team-high six rebounds for CU.

With 11:20 remaining in the game, Boogaard made two free throws to give her 1,001 points in her career, becoming the 22nd player in program history to join the 1,000-point club.

Boogaard’s two free throws started a 17-4 run over the next seven minutes to give KU a commanding 78-44 lead. The Jayhawks held CU without a field goal for 5:42 as part of the run.

Kansas finished the game with a 62.0 field goal percentage, the third time this season the Jayhawks shot at least 62 percent from the field and the 11th time in school history. Conversely, KU held Colorado to 35.0 percent from the field. Kansas out-rebounded the Buffaloes, 38-29, and also outpaced CU in assists by a count of 18-7.

Kansas began the game on a 15-3 run in the first 5:13, which included five consecutive points by Davis and four from Engelman. Boogaard, Brown and Mays also had baskets as part of the opening sequence, as Kansas made six of its first nine field goal attempts.

Leading 23-14 at the eight-minute mark of the first half, freshman Angel Goodrich and Davis made back-to-back layups followed by a jump shot by Sutherland to give KU a 29-14 margin with 5:30 on the clock. The Jayhawks never led by less than double-digits from that point forward. Kansas finished the half on a 15-6 run to take a 46-27 lead into the intermission.

Kansas shot 62.1 percent from the field in the first half, including 3-for-7 from three-point range, while CU made 44 percent of its shots. KU led Colorado in the first half in points off turnovers, 17-5, as well as points in the paint, 26-12.

Davis led all players with 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting for the first half, while Engelman had 12 points, including a perfect 2-for-2 mark from three-point range in the first 20 minutes. Wilson and Spears combined for 23 of CU’s 27 points at halftime with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Kansas will play its next game at Texas Saturday at 2 p.m. KU will then return home for a contest against Iowa State in Allen Fielhdouse next Wednesday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m.
