Swimming and Diving Leads Iowa State after Day One

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Kansas swimming and diving team leads Iowa State, 91-59 after the first of a two-day dual at Beyer Hall in Ames, Iowa. Kansas will complete the two-day dual against the Cyclones Saturday at 10 a.m.

The `Hawks took the top spot in the 200 medley relay. Junior Jenny Short, freshman Danielle Herrmann, senior Lindsey Urbatchka and sophomore Terri Schramka combined to finish the race in 1:46.74. Kansas also had a team place third with a time of 1:50.43.

Freshman Molly Brammer finished the 800 free with a time of 8:11.07. Junior Lia Pogioli finished second (8:11.62) and sophomore Lindsay Herre finished fifth (8:32.42). Short won the 50 back with a time of 27.19. Sophomores Lauren Bonfe and Allie Rubino finished second (27.38) and fifth (29.02), respectively.

Senior co-captain Gina Gnatzig won the 150 free with a time of 1:22.77. Schramka finished third with a time of 1:22.84 and junior Bri Brotherson finished fourth with a time of 1:25.58. Herrmann took the top spot in the 50 breast with a time of 29.97. Freshman Rhynn Malloy and sophomore Nikki Maples came in fourth (32.29) and fifth (33.25), respectively.

Kansas earned a second place finish from senior co-captain Emily Rusch in the 150 fly with a time of 1:33.33. Freshman Ashley Leidigh took third with a time of 1:33.61 and junior Emily Knopp took fifth (1:35.94).

In the final race of the day, Herrmann earned a second place finish in the 100 IM. The Itsaca, Ill., native finished the race in 1:00.60. Gnatzig finished fourth (1:01.36) and Rusch finished fifth (1:01.39).

In diving action, junior Shelby Noonan finished second scoring 248.32 points. Senior Robyn Karlage finished third with 231.14 points and senior Casey Topol finished fourth with 230.77 points.
