Ole Miss defeats Kansas, 6-1

Oxford, Miss. – The University of Kansas tennis team was defeated by the Ole Miss Lady Rebels on Friday, 6-1, at the Gillom Sports Center in Oxford, Miss. The loss drops the Jayhawks to 1-2 on the season.

In doubles action, Kansas earned one victory by juniors Christine Skoda and Luiza Loureiro over the Lady Rebel’s Carlin Cochran and Preethi Subramanian, 8-5. Ole Miss took the next two matches to secure the point in doubles play.

Needing to win four of the six singles matches, the Jayhawks fought hard but could only manage one victory. Sophomore Ashley Filberth rallied to win a third set tiebreaker over Cochran to win the match, 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (5). In number one singles, Elizaveta Avdeeva was unable to knock off Mississippi’s Chloe Carlotti, who is ranked No. 32 in the nation, as Avdeeva fell, 6-1, 6-1.

Kansas is next in action on Sunday, Feb. 6, against Mississippi State. The match begins at 2 p.m. and will be held in Starkville, Miss.
