LAWRENCE, Kan. – In conjunction with a University of Kansas campus-wide effort, the KU athletics department raised $5,000 for the “KU Campaign for Tsunami Relief,” athletics department officials announced Friday.

University of Kansas students organized a campaign to raise funds to assist the victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami. The campaign started with a collection at the KU-Nebraska men’s basketball game Jan. 19, and included another collection at the KU-Missouri women’s game Jan. 22.

Student Senate, KU UNICEF and the Center for Community Outreach at KU coordinated the “KU Campaign for Tsunami Relief.” In addition to the American Red Cross collecting donations at the two basketball games, the effort included on-campus fund-raising, a repeat presentation of Professor Don Steeple’s very popular lecture on tsunamis and a candlelight vigil.

“The KU athletics department was proud to be part of this outstanding effort,” KU Athletics Director Lew Perkins said. “Once again our fans showed how generous they can be.”
