Postgame Quotes
Kansas 65, Iowa St. 64
February 1, 2006
Head Coach Bonnie Henrickson
On the game:
“First of all, give a very good Iowa State team credit for playing very well. I think we did a very good job of making the extra pass today. This team is generally very good at doing that. By making the extra pass, that got us some real good looks at the basket. I’m real excited about how our kids bounced back today after a tough loss against Colorado. We played with real pride today. We beat a great team that played very strong today. I thought Ivana (Catic) really hit some tough shots for us today, particularly in the first half. She has been struggling a bit as of late. Give credit to our position coaches for starting at the basics with her to get things going again. We tried to communicate to the kids at halftime how they needed to come out like the score is 0-0 because we knew Iowa State was going to come out hard against us in the second half.”
On Erica Hallman possibly intentionally missing the last free throw:
“No, because we would much rather be ahead by two points where they could possibly tie the game. Actually, we wanted her to intentionally miss a free throw last year against Colorado and she made it.”
Sophomore Forward Taylor McIntosh
On Iowa State’s second half run:
“We just didn’t come out with the same focus that we did in the first half. Coach (Henrickson) said that we didn’t play not to lose. They (Iowa State) switched up to man defense and we have been working on the zone in practice. We just weren’t as aggressive as we could have been.”
Senior Guard Kaylee Brown
On Iowa State’s three-point shooting:
“They are primarily a three-point shooting team. They shot like 200 more three’s than us this year, and we knew we had to go out there and defend that.”
Senior Guard Erica Hallman
On Kansas’ loss of the lead:
“The 19 point lead came because we were aggressive in the zone. They got back in the game with their excellent three-point shooting. I thought we stayed poised and finished the game out strong.”
On the last play of the game:
“I live for these kinds of things; I want the ball in my hand the last couple of seconds. Bonnie (Henrickson) had confidence in me and I had confidence in myself to make the shots if I got fouled.”
Senior Forward Crystal Kemp
On the win:
“I feel really fortunate to win this game. We were up by 13, and we let them get ahead of us. The fact that we continued to keep our poise and come back and win was definitely a plus for us.”
Iowa State Head Coach Bill Fennelly
On the game:
“I thought the last 18 minutes of the game our kids played the way Iowa State teams are supposed to play. You’re on the road, down 19, your point guard is not playing and you have a chance to win at the end. I think that says a lot about your players and the way they approach the game. We changed our defense at halftime. We haven’t even practiced man-to-man, and we played it the rest of the half. It is always tough to lose, but I think our team showed a little bit of something that we have been looking for. We played about as well as we could the last 18 minutes, we were just one play short. You have to give Kansas credit for that. Bonnie (Henrickson) does a great job, and her seniors know how to play. They deserve to win the game. They made one more play then we did.”
Iowa State Junior Guard Megan Ronhovde
On the game:
“In the first half we dug ourselves a hole and were down by 13 at half. The coaches did a good job of making adjustments by going to the man-to-man defense. I think it got to the point where we thought enough is enough. We hit some shots, made some plays and gave ourselves a chance to win.”
