Jayhawks Open Spring Season at Hawaii-Hilo Invitational

Feb. 4, 2008

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

The Kansas men’s golf team will try to sustain the improvements it made during the latter parts of the fall season, when they open the spring portion of their schedule at the Hawaii-Hilo Invitational in Kona, Hawaii. The 54-hole, three-day event will be conducted at the Waikoloa Village Golf Course on Feb. 6-8.

“We are really looking forward to getting the spring season going,” said head coach Kit Grove. “We are both fortunate and happy to play at such a great venue and a great event to open the spring season.”

The Jayhawks lineup for the event will consist of juniors Walt Koelbel and Zach Pederson, sophomore Bobby Knowles, and freshmen Nate Barbee and Brad Hopfinger. This was the same lineup the Jayhawks utilized in their last event of the fall season at the Landfall Tradition.

“We showed signs of improvement down the stretch and we would like to have that carry over into this tournament,” said Grove.

Koelbel, who led the team with two top-20 finishes, along with Pederson will again try to give this very young squad some experience and leadership during the spring campaign.

The Jayhawks will once again rely upon their two sensational freshmen, Barbee and Hopfinger, during the spring season. The duo led the Jayhawks in scoring average during the fall season.
