Kansas Women's Basketball Snaps Four-Game Skid, Defeats Colorado 65-54

LAWRENCE, Kan.– For the fifth game in a row, junior Danielle McCray scored 20 or more points as the Kansas women’s basketball team broke a four-game losing streak by defeating Colorado, 65-54, in Allen Fieldhouse Wednesday night. McCray led all scorers with 22 points and chipped in a team-high six rebounds.

Kansas improved to 13-7 overall and 2-5 in Big 12 play. Colorado dropped to 10-10 on the season and 2-6 in the league.

The Jayhawks led by as many as 15 in the second half, but had to fight off a 10-2 run by CU that cut the lead to seven points with four minutes remaining. A put back by freshman Aishah Sutherland stopped the run and KU pushed the lead back out to nine points.

The Buffaloes shot 60 percent in the second half, but couldn’t overcome a 29 percent first half performance as Kansas claimed the 11-point victory. Colorado was led by Kara Richards with 17 points.

The Buffs hit three three-pointers to start the game before KU battled back to tie the game at 11. Kansas then took its first lead of the game, 16-14, at the 7:05 mark on a three-pointer by sophomore Nicollette Smith. The Jayhawks finished the half on a 16-2 run, entering the locker room with a 32-18 lead.

Junior Sade Morris tallied 13 points and led KU with three steals while Sutherland recorded a career high 12 points on six-of-eight shooting. Junior LaChelda Jacobs led the Jayhawks with five assists and McCray dished out four assists.

Kansas turned 21 Colorado turnovers into 23 points and won the rebounding battle 65-54 on the way to 19 second-chance points.

Kansas will travel to Columbia, Mo. to take on the Missouri Tigers on Saturday at the MIZZOU Arena. The game is set to tip-off at 1 p.m. and will be televised on FSN.
