Charlie Weis To Speak At Boys And Girls Club Youth of the Year Event

Feb. 4, 2013

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas football head coach Charlie Weis will be the keynote speaker at the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence’s Youth of the Year event that recognizes outstanding local youth. The light-hearted affair, which will be held at the Lied Center on Wednesday, Feb. 6, from 6:30-8 p.m., is open to the public.

The evening will feature entertainment from Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence youth, inspiration from local leaders and the announcement of the 2013 Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence Youth of the Year.

The Youth of the Year is the Boys & Girls Club of America’s national program that highlights club members’ (ages 14-18) success in service, leadership and the development of positive personal character. The Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence’s 2013 Youth of the Year nominees are Ajala Anavberokhai and Jalyn Brecheisen.

Weis was selected as the keynote speaker as someone who knows exactly how to inspire these characteristics in others and has done so himself – as seen through the success he’s had on the football field, in his family’s Foundation (Hannah and Friends) and in life.

The 2012 Boys & Girls Club of America’s National Youth of the Year is Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence’s Trei Dudley. Dudley will also participate in the evening, enlightening the crowd with her experiences as the National Youth of the Year.

Local Boys and Girls Clubs recognize members as Youth of the Year candidates and select a Youth of the Year winner, who then participates in a state competition. State winners each receive a $1,000 scholarship and participate in regional competitions. Five regional winners each receive a $10,000 scholarship and compete on the national level. The National Youth of the Year receives up to an additional $50,000 scholarship and is installed by the President of the United States.
