Quartet of Record Breakers Named to Weekly Awards

Feb. 4, 2013

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Seniors Kyle Clemons, Andrea Geubelle, Alena Krechyk and junior Natalia Bartnovskaya were named KU track & field’s Athletes of the Week following their performances at the Armory Collegiate Invitational in New York City last weekend. Geubelle and Clemons earn the award for the third time this season, while Bartnovskaya earns the award for the second time. Krechyk was honored for the first time in 2013.

Kyle Clemons // SR // Rowlett, Texas // Sprints
Running in his first collegiate 500 meters Kyle Clemons posted the fastest time in school history, running to a second-place finish in a time of 1:02.32. The time is just under two seconds fastest than Keron Toussaint’s previous school record and is the third-fastest 500 meters run this season. Earlier this year, Clemons broke the Anschutz Pavilion record in the 600 yards in 1:09.77, a time that also ranks No. 3 in the NCAA this year.

Andrea Geubelle // SR // University Place, Wash. // Long Jump
Geubelle not only broke the Kansas school record but also the meet record in the long jump, hitting a mark of 6.69 meters (21-11.5 ft.) on her fifth attempt of the day. Her mark is just a quarter of an inch shy of the collegiate all-time top-10 performers list, and broke the previous Kansas indoor record by 11 inches. Hers is the farthest jump in the nation this season by 11 inches, and ranks her seventh in the world in 2013. She also owns the No. 2 spot on the Division I triple jump performance list.

Alena Krechyk // SR // Grodnos, Belarus // Weight Throw
Krechyk, who broke her own school weight throw record at the same meet a season ago, notched a mark of 21.76 meters (71-4.75 ft.) on her first throw of the morning. In only one throw Krechyk smashed her own school record by over two feet, broke the Armory Collegiate meet record and secured the No. 2 mark in the NCAA this season. Krechyk’s winning toss was over 18 inches better than the rest of the field and gave her the second victory of her 2013 campaign.

Natalia Bartnovskaya // JR // Krasnoyarsk, Russia // Pole Vault
After taking a week off from competition, Bartnovskaya returned to action Friday night looking stronger than ever. With the bar up to 4.30 meters (14-1.25 ft.), Bartnovskaya managed to slink over, clinching her fourth pole vault win in four-straight meets. Her mark tied former Jayhawk All-Americans Amy Linnen and Kate Sultanova as the highest-vaulting Jayhawks in school history and keeps her in a prime position to secure a bid to the NCAA Indoor Championships in March as she holds the No. 3 mark in the NCAA.
