LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Kansas swimming and diving team celebrated Senior Day as it defeated Iowa State, 196-99, in a Big 12 Conference dual meet, Saturday in Lawrence, Kan. With the win, the Jayhawks completed their dual meet season with an 8-5 overall record, 1-4 in Big 12 duals. Kansas honored its six senior swimmers, Aly Colver, Amy Gruber, Miranda Isaac, Katie Knighton, Jackie Krueger, Becca Zarazan and their parents prior to the 16-event meet.

“Our kids stepped it up on Senior Day,” head coach Clark Campbell said. “We were pretty emotional entering the meet, but we came out and swam well. Anytime you can get a Big 12 dual meet win, it is big.”

Senior Amy Gruber was one of the multiple event winners for the Jayhawks in the meet. The Bigelow, Ark., native won the 50 (24.04) and 100 (51.94) freestyle events in the final dual meet of her career. She was also a member of the two winning relay teams. Gruber, senior Miranda Isaac, junior Lindsey Urbatchka and sophomore Jenny Short won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:46.17. Gruber and Urbatchka also teamed with senior Jackie Krueger and freshman Terri Schramka to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:36.83. Senior Miranda Isaac added to her relay victory with two individual victories of her own in the final dual meet of her career. The Hutchinson, Kan., native won the 100 (1:04.97) and 200 (2:21.23) breaststroke events. Junior Gina Gnatzig collected two individual victories in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:04.84, and the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:19.59. Senior Becca Zarazan recorded an individual win in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:08.85. Junior Lindsey Urbatchka added an individual event win in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.28. Sophomore Jenny Short won the 100 backstroke (58.48) to go along with her relay victory.

On the diving boards, sophomore Shelby Noonan was Kansas’ top diver as she won the one-meter competition with a score of 259.20 and finished second in the three-meter competition with a score of 445.57.

“Today was bittersweet for us. We were happy to win, but sad to see these six seniors go. We will never be able to replace them and all they have done for our program,” Campbell said. “We will be carrying a lot of momentum into the Big 12 Championships. We have set ourselves up to do very well.”

The Jayhawks will next be in action when they travel to College Station, Texas, to take part in the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships, Feb. 23-26.
