LAWRENCE, Kan. – Husker Invitational Female Athlete of the Meet, senior Kate Sultanova, was honored once again this week, earning Big 12 Female Athlete of the Week accolades on Tuesday.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Sultanova garnered the top female award at the 33rd annual Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational on Saturday after her winning pole vault of 4.20 meters (13-09.25 ft.).

With that effort, the Krasnodar, Russia native held the nation’s leading height at the time and automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. Sultanova currently leads the Big 12 and is second in the country in the women’s pole vault.

“We are always happy with an automatic qualifier,” vertical jumps coach Tom Hays said. “You are always ahead when you reach that mark. Now she can train harder and experiment more to get ready for conference and national meets.”

This is the second time the three-time All-American has won the award. She also took home the merit during the week of Feb. 13, 2007 as she became just the second female collegian to clear 14 feet in the women’s pole vault. Her career-best vault of 14-00.25 feet was good for second place at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.

Sultanova and the Jayhawks will now travel to New York, N.Y., on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9, for the New Balance Collegiate Invitational.
