Giroux Paces Jayhawks During Day One at Hawaii-Hilo Invitational

Mauna Lani, Hawaii — Freshman Blake Giroux fired the third under-par round of his career shooting an opening-round 70 at the Hawaii-Hilo Invitational to lead the Kansas Men’s Golf team to a 14th place finish after the first round of play.

Giroux fired a 31 on the back nine of the Mauna Lani Resort North Course (par-72, 6,913 yards) to propel himself into a tied for fifth place finish after one round of play.

Sophomore Nate Barbee shot a first-round 78 to finish day one tied for 63rd place. Barbee finished tied for 68th at the 2008 Hawaii-Hilo Invitational.

Senior Walt Koelbel, the lone other Jayhawk who has previously competed in the event, shot an opening-day 80 to finish tied for 76th.

Senior Andrew Storm shot an 81 to finish the day tied for 83rd place. Freshman Ian Anson shot an 83 to tie for 92nd place.

Washington leads the event after day one with 281 strokes. Rodolfo Estrada, of host school Hawaii-Hilo, leads the event while playing as an individual with an opening-round 66.
