Finley's Meet Record Highlights Solid KU Performance in Day One of New Balance Invitational

Feb. 4, 2011

New York City –

Kansas sophomore thrower Mason Finley set the meet and venue record in the shot put with a throw of 20.40m (66-11.25ft.) at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational Friday night in New York City. His record throw earned him a first place finish, which was just one of several high finishes by other Jayhawks on the night, giving the team a solid start in day one of the two day meet. Finley was just one of six Jayhawks that finished in top five of their respective events. The day also marked personal and season bests for seven Jayhawks, already making this meet one of the more noteworthy events of the year for the track and field squad.

While Finley was having the performance of the meet in the shot put, Jaci Perryman was working her way toward a fifth place finish in the pole vault. The senior had a 4.10m (13-05.50ft.) jump which, along with being a personal best, was a Kansas team best for the 2011 season. Fellow pole vaulters Demi Payne and Julia Cummings finshed 10th and 11th, both recording jumps of 3.80 meters (12-05.50ft.).

Sophomore Francine Simpson kept up with the PR setting trend by recording both a personal record and the team’s season best in the long jump. Simpson’s jump of 6.22m (20-05.00ft.) gave her a fourth place finish overall. Andrea Geubelle finshed just four spots back for an eighth place finish with a jump of 5.96m (19-06.75ft.).

Kansas didn’t disappoint on the track either. Both the men’s and women’s distance medley relay teams recorded season bests. The men; Dalen Fink, Pieter Marx, Josh Munsch, and Donny Wasinger finished ninth overall with a time of 10:06.57, while the women; Kendra Bradley, Cori Christensen, Kyra Kilwein, and Rebeka Stowe, ran a time of 11:39.93. This time gave them a 10th place finish in the event.

Sophomore Sean Proehl ran the 1,000 meters in a time of 2:31.95, making him another Jayhawk that recorded a personal best and season best on the night. His effort pushed him to a 29th place finish in the event. Not to be outdone, in the 3,000 meters Josh Baden finished ninth with a personal best time of 8:36.90.

Joel Krause rounded out a great night for the shot put squad with a throw of 15.98m (52-05.00ft.). His performance gave him a 15th place finish and made him the 6th Jayhawk to record a PR on the night. On the women’s side Jessica Maroszek, earned a mark of 13.86m (45-05.75ft.), putting her 14th overall.

Saturday the Jayhawks will be back in action all day at The Armory Track & Field Center. Several Jayhawks will be looking for top performances, with highlighted events being the men’s and women’s 4X400 meter relay, women’s mile, women’s 400 meters, men’s 3,000 meter run, and men’s pole vault.
