Swimming and Diving Honors Senior Class and Leads ISU After Day One

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas swimming and diving leads Iowa State, 106-44, following Friday evening’s competition. KU also celebrated its nine seniors with a pre-dual ceremony for Senior Day. Leading the Jayhawks was its 200 yard Medley Relay team who broke the Robinson Natatorium record in a time of 1:42.77.

Kansas honored each senior prior to the competition. KU’s senior class is comprised of Molly Brammer, Jessica Brozek, Danielle Herrmann, Ashley Leidigh, Rhynn Malloy, Kendall Matous, Maria Mayrovich and Hannah McMacken.

Kansas opened the competition with a victory in the 200 yard medley relay. KU’s medley relay team, consisting of sophomore Iuliia Kuzhil and seniors’ Herrmann, Leidigh, and Mayrovich touched the wall in a pool record time of 1:42.77.

Freshman Shannon Garlie was victorious in the 800 yard freestyle in a time of 8:10.73.

Mayrovich continued her strong swimming by dominating the 150 yard freestyle. Her time of 1:19.65 was nearly three seconds faster than the nearest competitor.

Leidigh also had a successful senior day, winning the 150 yard butterfly in a time of 1:29.98.

Kuzhil also picked up an individual victory in the 50 yard backstroke in a time of 26.44.

Herrmann was victorious in two individual events on Friday, winning the 100 yard IM and the 50 yard breaststroke. The senior won the 100 yard IM in a time of 57.39 and the 50 yard breaststroke in a time of 29.46.

On the diving board, Iowa State’s Tien Tran won the three meter competition with a score of 323.33. KU took the next three spots with Erin Mertz taking second with 301.43 points scored. Meghan Proehl had a season-best score of 282.82, strong enough for fourth place, while McMacken took third with 291.37.

Kansas and Iowa State will continue their two-day dual Saturday morning at 10 a.m. Due to the men’s basketball game on Saturday, the KU Parking Department is requesting that all fans for the swim meet park in Lot 34. Lot 34 is located southeast of the Computer Sciences Services facility and east of Robinson Natatorium on the corner of Sunnyside Avenue and Illinois St.
