KU Breaks Records in Defeat of Iowa State, 182-113

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas (11-3) swimming and diving defeated Iowa State, 182-113, and broke several pool records Saturday morning at Robinson Natatorium. KU entered the day with a 106-44 lead from Friday evening, but the Jayhawks continued to build that lead through the first several events. Kansas lost only one event over the two-day competition.

Senior Maria Mayrovich got things started for Kansas, winning the 50 yard freestyle in a time of 23.19.

Mayrovich was also a member of the winning 200 yard freestyle relay team. KU’s ‘A’ team, also comprised of Iuliia Kuzhil, Amanda Maez and Emily Lanteigne touched the wall in a school and pool record time of 1:32.27. Mayrovich was the lead leg and had a split of 22.72, which broke a 26-year old Robinson Natatorium record for the 50 yard freestyle. The previous record of 22.86 was set by Tammy Thomas in 1983.

Kuzhil also picked up an individual victory on Saturday. Kuzhil was victorious in the 150 yard backstroke in a time of 1:29.24. Freshman Shannon Garlie touched the wall in the 400 yard freestyle in a winning time of 3:58.76.

Seniors Danielle Herrmann and Ashley Leidigh capped off their impressive racing careers at Robinson Natatorium with individual victories. Herrmann rolled to a two-second victory in the 150 yard breaststroke, while Leidigh touched the wall in the 50 yard butterfly in a time of 26.21.

Sophomore Joy Bunting led a Jayhawk sweep of the 300 yard I.M. finishing in a time of 3:14.64.

On the diving board, Kansas’ Erin Mertz had a season-best score of 295.04 to win the one meter competition. Meghan Proehl placed second with a score of 280.95. Tien Tran of Iowa State placed third with a score of 254.70. Senior Hannah McMacken finished fourth with a score of 248.47.

KU elected to exhibition all of its relay and non-first place scores from the final score.
