Jayhawks Defeat UCSB 3-2 In Season Opener

SAN DIEGO, Calif. –
Freshman Sara Ramirez hit a solo home run in the fifth inning and two Jayhawks notched RBI in the seventh as <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Kansas softball defeated UC Santa Barbara, 3-2, in the teams’ season opener Thursday night at the Campbell-Cartier Classic. Senior Kassie Humphreys (1-0) struck out seven as the Jayhawks picked up their first victory at the SDSU Softball Stadium.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Sophomore Dougie McCaulley went 2-for-4, including an RBI bunt single in the seventh to lead the KU offense. Ramirez was 1-for-2 with a homer and walk in her first collegiate game. Sophomore Stevie Crisosto, who totaled 11 doubles last year, notched her first two-bagger of the season while freshman Ally Stanton had a bunt single and scored her first run as a Jayhawk in the seventh.
Humphreys opened the contest by striking out the side. She held the Gauchos to just three hits and walked one in the complete-game victory. Jennifer Davis (0-1) took the loss for UCSB, giving up five hits and striking out eight in seven innings of work.
Kansas took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Tisha Duran singled to lead off and with one out, Ericka Hansen tripled to put UCSB on the board. Brittany Putich’s sacrifice fly scored Hansen from third, but Humphreys ground out Davis to seal the win.
KU continues tournament action Friday against No. 10/10 Cal at 4 p.m. (Central).
