Jayhawks Face Test From No. 23 Tulsa

Feb. 8, 2013

LAWRENCE, Kan. – After rolling to a 2-0 dual start in 2013, the Kansas women’s tennis team will likely face its biggest non-conference test when it plays No. 23 Tulsa on Sunday at Jayhawk Tennis Center.

The Jayhawks kicked off their dual season last weekend with home victories over Denver, 4-3, and Saint Louis, 6-1. Junior Paulina Los and freshman Maria Jose Cardona both completed the weekend undefeated in singles and doubles play.

“Tulsa is going to be a big match,” coach Amy Hall-Holt said. “I think we added a lot of confidence (against St. Louis). We still have a lot of work to do, but I think we’re headed in the right direction.”

Tulsa will play its seventh match of the season and holds a 5-1 record in 2013. Two of those wins came over ranked teams—No. 64 Wichita State, 6-1, and No. 32 Rice, 5-2. Its lone setback came to No. 19 Clemson, 4-0, in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Jan. 26.

The Golden Hurricane are led by junior Samantha Vickers, who entered the season ranked No. 124 nationally in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Vickers and sophomore doubles partner Isaura Enrique are also ranked No. 9 in the country, and were crowned champions of the ITA Central Region Championships in October.

Tulsa has defeated Kansas in each of the past six seasons, with the Jayhawks’ last win over the Hurricane coming in 2006.

Doubles play will begin at noon, with singles matches taking place immediately afterward. All Kansas women’s tennis matches at Jayhawk Tennis Center are free and open to the public. Stay tuned to KUAthletics.com for live scoring updates at every home event this season.
