LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas head coach Ritch Price announced Friday that senior infielders Alex DeLeon, Jordan Dreiling and Kevin Kuntz have been named captains of the Jayhawk baseball team for the 2013 season. All three seniors will be serving as team captain for the first time in their careers.

“I’m pleased to announce that Alex DeLeon, Jordan Dreiling, and Kevin Kuntz will serve as team captains for the 2013 season,” Price said. “With 22 freshmen/sophomores on our roster, their leadership skills will be essential for our young team to be successful in the Big 12 Conference.”

DeLeon, an infielder/catcher from Woodland Hills, Calif., will play first base this year and also serve as a backup catcher. The 6-foot-1 senior batted .261 a year ago in 43 games and collected seven doubles, four homers and 23 RBIs. He led the team with 16 two-out RBIs and recorded a .395 batting average with runners in scoring position. DeLeon is a career .264 hitter and leads all current Jayhawks with 11 round-trippers while at KU.

Dreiling, an infielder from Lawrence, Kan., will be the team’s starting third baseman this season. As a junior in 2012, Dreiling batted .301 with five doubles, three triples and a career-high 29 runs scored. He has been an on-base machine in his three-year career, drawing 46 walks in 263 plate appearances for a .422 on-base percentage. Last season, he was selected First Team Academic All-Big 12 and earned mention on the Big 12 Commissioner’s and Athletic Director’s honor rolls.

Kuntz, an infielder from Overland Park, Kan., will be the Jayhawks’ starting shortstop in 2013. Kuntz started all 58 games for KU at short last season and finished the year with a .962 fielding percentage. He batted .251 with three doubles, two triples and a team-best 10 stolen bases. In his career, Kuntz has a .272 batting average with 16 steals and a .389 career on-base percentage. He is a three-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s and Athletic Director’s honor rolls and earned the John Trombold Gold Glove last season.

Kansas will open the 2013 season in Mesa, Ariz., with four games against Nevada at Hohokam Park. The Jayhawks and Wolf Pack will open their four-game set on Friday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m.
