Three Divers to Compete at NCAA Zone D Regional Diving Meet

Feb. 9, 2005

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Three University of Kansas divers have qualified to compete in the NCAA Zone D Regional Diving Meet, March 11-13, in College Station, Texas. Junior Casey Topol, sophomore Shelby Noonan and freshman Jenny Roberts have each qualified behind the strength of individual performances during the 2004-05 season.

“I am very proud of the way our divers have competed this year,” diving coach Eric Elliott said. “I thought we had some talent coming into the year, but they have really impressed me. Each diver has had a great attitude and positive work ethic all season. It has really paid off.”

Noonan, the only Jayhawk to compete at the regional meet last season, qualified on the three-meter board with her performance at the Nike Cup, Nov. 20. The Edmond, Okla., native won the three-meter competition at the Nike Cup with a championship-meet score (11 dives) of 487.40. Roberts qualified on the one-meter board with her first-place finish at Drury, Jan. 28, where she scored 274.50 dual-meet (six dives) points. Topol most recently qualified to compete on the three-meter board with a championship-meet score (11 dives) of 434.78 against Iowa State, Feb. 5.

Each diver will compete in the one-meter, three-meter, and platform competitions at the NCAA Zone D Regional Diving Meet with a chance to qualify to compete in the NCAA Diving Finals, March 17-19, at Boilermaker Aquatic Center in West Lafayette, Ind.

“We are looking forward to the Big 12 Championships,” Elliott added. “Hopefully we can score some team points at the Big 12 meet and it will prepare us to compete at the NCAA Zone meet a couple of weeks later.”

The Kansas swimming and diving team will next be in action when it travels to College Station, Texas, to compete in the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships, Feb. 23-26.
