HILO, Hawaii – The University of Kansas baseball team came alive offensively to pound out 16 runs on 14 hits as they defeated Hawaii-Hilo 16-8 at Wong Field in Hilo, Hawaii, on Tuesday night to take a 5-0 lead in the six game series.

Junior left-handed pitcher Travis Goset made his first start of the season and limited the Vulcans to only five hits and one earned run in three innings pitched. Sophomore Ryotaro Hayakawa (1-0) picked up his first win of the season as he entered the game in relief of Goset and threw two shutout innings.

“This was a game that we knew we were going to staff and was going to take a team effort,” Kansas head coach Ritch Price said. “Travis Goset was able to give us some good innings and work his way out of a couple jams. Ryotaro Hayakawa came in and worked his way out of trouble to give us a good outing as well. It was really nice for us to really break out with the bats in the later innings and put the game out of reach. This puts us in a great position to come out tomorrow and complete the sweep. That would make this a very special trip.”

In the top of the first inning, Kansas took an early 2-0 lead complements of back-to-back RBI singles from freshman designated hitter John Allman and senior catcher Jake Kauzlarich.

The Vulcans (0-11) countered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to cut the Jayhawk lead to 2-1.

Hawaii-Hilo again put a run on the board in bottom of the third inning to tie the game at 2-2.

The Jayhawks retook the lead in the top of the fifth inning, scoring a pair of runs to open a 4-2 advantage. With two outs left fielder Matt Baty reached on an error and was able to score as first baseman Jared Schweitzer followed with an RBI single. Schweitzer, who finished the game 3-for4, scored later in the inning when Allman singled to center field.

Allman finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and two RBI.

In the sixth inning, KU took advantage of three Vulcan walks and two wild pitches to put a pair of runs on the scoreboard and increase its lead to 6-2.

The Jayhawks broke the game open in the seventh inning by batting around to throw six more runs on the scoreboard. Baty provided the inning’s biggest hit, connecting on a two-run single for his only hit of the ballgame.

Kansas added three runs in the eighth inning and a final run in the ninth to put up their highest run total of the season.

Kansas and Hawaii-Hilo will play the final game of the six-game series on Wednesday at Wong Field in Hilo, Hawaii. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. local time (10 p.m. CST).
