KU Falls To #10 Cal, 8-0

SAN DIEGO, Calif. –

Tenth-ranked <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Cal used 10 hits in five innings to defeat Kansas softball, 8-0, Friday afternoon in Day Two of the Campbell-Cartier Classic at SDSU Stadium. Five KU freshmen saw action in the contest as the Jayhawks moved to 1-1 on the season.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Freshmen Sara Ramirez and Amanda Jobe notched hits for KU while sophomore Dougie McCaulley drew two walks in the effort. Sophomore Val George (0-1) made her first start of the season, giving up seven hits and six runs (four earned), walking two and striking out two in two-and-one-third innings. Freshman Sarah Vertelka threw two-and-two-thirds innings of relief and allowed three hits and two runs (both earned), walked two and fanned two batters in her first career appearance.

Cal’s Brittany LaRosa allowed just two hits, walked five and struck out one in five innings for the complete-game victory.

Cal (1-0) scored first in the top of the first on two infield slaps and a single to left field. A passed ball put two Bears in scoring position for clean-up hitter Bernice Masaniai, who hit Cal’s first ball out of the infield for the RBI. Sophomore Val Chapple helped KU get out of the inning with a line drive double play at third.

The Bears added to their lead in the second when pinch hitter Gina Leomiti doubled with bases loaded to rack up three RBI. Despite the damage, George ended the inning striking out Cal’s No. 3 batter, as the Bears took a 4-0 lead.

The Jayhawks had three opportunities with bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, but could not capitalize. Cal clinched the run-rule victory (eight-run lead after five innings) with two more runs in the fifth off three consecutive hits.

KU will play two games Saturday – No. 6/6 OregonState at 11 a.m. and host San DiegoState at 2 p.m. (Both times Central.) The SDSU game may be delayed depending on the length of previous tournament contests.
