Once the students had gathered they were surprised with a guest appearance by Kansas women’s basketball coach Bonnie Henrickson, who spoke with the kids about performing well in school, specifically the Kansas state assessments tests.

In just a few short weeks, students at Schwegler Elementary will take the state’s standardized tests. The Kansas State Assessment is what Kansas uses to determine whether or not a student meets standards in specific areas such as reading, writing, math, science, and history/government. Coach Henrickson encouraged the school to do their best on the exams and suggested cutting out outside distractions such as television, radio and phones during study time. The Jayhawks’ head coach compared the students’ preparation for tests to her team’s training for upcoming games.

“I told them how important it is to make the sacrifice to be better. If they want to win as a team, and they feel like their school is a team, the best way to make the team better is to make yourself better,” Henrickson said of her message to students. “That is something we talk about in our (basketball) program. The best way to make our team better is to get better individually, so I shared the same message we use with our players.”
