Kansas Tennis to Host Pair of Weekend Duals

LAWRENCE, Kan.–Coming off its fourth 1-0 start to the spring season in as many years, the University of Kansas women’s tennis team plays host to UTEP Friday at 2 p.m. and Illinois State Sunday at noon at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. The UTEP Miners come to Lawrence with a 1-4 record while the Illinois State Redbirds sit at 1-2 for the spring season.

KU recorded its first victory of the spring season Tuesday as the Jayhawks rolled to a 6-1 victory over UMKC. Kansas swept the doubles competition with the new doubles tandems of sophomore Dylan Windom and freshman Maria Belen Ludueña and junior Victoria Khanevskaya and sophomore Claire Dreyer claiming quick victories. Kansas’ No. 1 doubles pair of junior Monica Pezzotti and sophomore Paulina Los narrowly escaped, grabbing an 8-7 (8-6) win over UMKC’s Eva Dalvai and Laura Bouet.

The Jayhawks went 5-1 in singles competition against the Kangaroos. Windom, a native of Tifton, Ga., came from three sets down to defeat Bouet at the No. 2 singles position, 6-4, 6-1. Ludueña and Los also had come-from-behind success, starting their singles matches down 1-0 before both earning one point for the team.

Scouting the Opponents
UTEP suffered a 3-4 setback to Air Force Sunday at the El Paso Tennis Club. The defeat was the second straight of the 3-4 variety for the Miners. Their victories in singles competition came at the No. 2, 5 and 6 positions, while their lone doubles win came at the No. 3 spot.

In its home opener, Illinois State dropped a 7-0 decision to the Iowa Hawkeyes Saturday. The Redbirds lost all of their singles matches in straight sets and dropped each doubles match by at least five games.

After the weekend, Kansas will continue its homestand with another weekend of duals. The Jayhawks will host Bradley Saturday, Feb. 18 and Arkansas-Little Rock Sunday, Feb. 19. Both matches begin at 11 a.m. and all matches are free and open to the public.
