Kansas Tops UCF For Tournament Title

ORLANDO, Fla. –

After getting just two runs from four hits against UCF in the two teams’ meeting yesterday, KU unloaded for six hits against the Knights to bring six runners across the plate as the <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>University of Kansas softball team shutout UCF, 6-0, in the title game and win the UCF Invitational here Sunday afternoon. KU defeated IllinoisState earlier in the day to reach the championship game.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

The win improves KU to 5-1, its best opening weekend record since 2003 when the Jayhawks went 4-0. UCF fell to 3-2 with the loss.

Junior hurler Valerie George earned her first win of the season from the pitcher’s circle throwing seven complete innings with no hits for KU’s second shutout of the year.

Juniors Elle Pottorf and Stevie Crisosto each had a pair of RBIs in the game on one hit a piece. Dougie McCaulley, a fellow junior, also batted in a run for the Jayhawks and led the team with two base hits as she finished with four for the day. Sophomore Amanda Jobe improved her hitting streak to three games with a hit against UCF.

Kansas will be back on the diamond next weekend in Las Vegas, Nev. for the UNLV Invitational, Feb. 15-17.
