LAWRENCE, Kan.–After sweeping doubles for the second time this week, the University of Kansas women’s tennis team won the first three singles matches to help secure a 5-2 victory over the UTEP Miners Friday at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. The Jayhawks are now 2-0 in the spring season for the first time since 2009, while the Miners drop to 1-5 in dual competition.

Junior Monica Pezzotti recorded an exhilarating comeback victory over Martina Tierweiler at the No. 1 singles position, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Her singles victory was the Jayhawks’ third of the day, clinching the win for the Crimson and Blue.

After losing the first set, 2-6, sophomore Claire Dreyer routed Dariya Abdrakhmanova, 6-1 and 7-5, to take the point at the No. 5 position.

KU’s other singles wins came from sophomore Dylan Windom at the No. 3 spot and Maria Belen Ludueña at No 4. Windom put in a dominating performance, defeating Gabi Vazquez 6-3, 6-2. Ludueña, a newcomer from Curtco, Chile, grabbed a win over UTEP’s Carolina DeLuca, 7-6(12-10), ret.

In doubles competition, Dreyer and junior Victoria Khanevskaya rallied from a 4-1 deficit to ensnare an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 spot.

Kansas will continue its five-match homestand Sunday when the Jayhawks host Illinois State at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. The dual meet is set to begin at noon and is free and open to the public.
