Feb. 11, 2005
LAWRENCE, Kan. –
The University of Kansas athletics department has named a $100,000 endowed scholarship for Andrew Debicki, a KU faculty member who died last month. The scholarship annually will go to a KU student-athlete.
Mr. Debicki, who was a member of the KU Athletics Advisory Board, was a renowned scholar of Spanish and Portuguese. He wrote numerous books on 20th Century Latin American and Spanish poetry.
“Professor Debicki had a profound influence on the University of Kansas in general and on KU athletics in particular,” said Lew Perkins, KU athletics director. “He was a valuable member of the KUAC Board because he truly cared about the welfare of the student-athletes here on campus. We are honored to name this scholarship for Andy.”
