SAN DIEGO, Calif. –
Kansas ended the 2007 Campbell-Cartier Classic with a 1-1 tie against No. 23/24 Massachusetts Sunday morning at the SDSU Softball Stadium. The Jayhawks (2-2-1) and Minutewomen (2-2-1) played five complete innings before a 30-minute rain delay and eventual tie ended the contest.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
KU was led offensively by freshman Amanda Jobe, who went 2-for-2. Sophomores Dougie McCaulley and Elle Pottorf, whose RBI double in the fourth posted the tying run, each added a hit to bring the Jayhawks’ total to four.
Senior Kassie Humphreys (2-0) threw a one-hitter, striking out three and walking five in five innings. Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year Brandice Balschmiter fanned four batters and walked one in five frames.
UMass posted its run in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Candice Molinari walked and Whitney Mollica notched a base hit that fell into the gap between shortstop and left center. Molinari had the green light with two outs and was able to score from first on the play.
KU retaliated with a tying run in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Jobe singled and advanced to second on a shortstop throwing error. Pottorf stepped to the plate and knocked a double off the left center wall for her third RBI of the season.
The Minutewomen threatened in the bottom of the fifth, but Humphreys connected with Pottorf to tag out Molinari at the plate while attempting to steal home, ending the inning and saving the tie.
The Jayhawks will head east Feb. 16-18 for the Sunshine State Tournament in Tallahassee, Fla. KU will face South Carolina, Florida State, Jacksonville and Memphis in the three-day invitational.
