Feb. 11, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan.—Kansas women’s golf kicks off the spring season at the Claud Jacobs Intercollegiate in Victoria, Texas at the Victoria Country Club Feb. 13 and 14.

“We are looking forward to heading south and getting back into competition mode,” said Kansas head coach Erin O’neil. “This event will be a good starting point for us to pick up where we left off in the fall.”

Kansas won the 2010 Marilynn Smith Invitational at Alvamar Country Club in Lawrence, Kan., with senior Grace Thiry taking the individual title and junior Katy Nugent finishing as the runner-up last fall. The Jayhawks also tied for second at the Chip-N Club Invitational behind strong play from both Thiry and fellow senior Meghna Bal who tied for fourth place.

Nugent leads the Jayhawks into the Claud Jacobs invitational with 74.5 strokes per round this season. Joining her in the KU line-up are Thiry and Bal as well freshmen Thanuttra Boonraksasat and Meghan Potee. Senior Jennifer Clark will be competing as an individual.

Kansas will be facing Ball State, Eastern Michigan, Houston Baptist, Houston Victoria, Lamar, Louisiana Monroe, McNeese State, Missouri State, North Texas, Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin, Texas State, Toledo, Tulsa, UTEP and UTPA.

“Our main goal for this weekend will be to stay in the present during each day and fight for every shot until that last putt goes in the hole on the final round,” O’neil Said.

The Jayhawks will next compete at the Louisville Cards Challenge in Weston, Fla. Feb. 27-March 1.
