Kansas Track and Field Friday Round-Up

Feb. 11, 2011

The KU track and field team has members in meets across the country this weekend with a total of 60 athletes traveling to four different sites. The throwers made the trip to Colorado Springs to take part in the Air Force Invitational, a meet that traditionally attracts the top throwers from around the country. Many of the vertical jumpers are in Fayetteville, Arkansas at the Tyson Invitational, which has proven to be a successful meet for the Jayhawks in the past. Junior Rebeka Stowe is the lone athlete representing KU at the Husky Invitational in Seattle, Washington this weekend. She will compete in the mile run and the 3,000 meter run on Saturday against some of the top collegiate runners in the country. The majority of the team traveled to Ames, Iowa for the ISU Classic, with a total of 39 members competing in 23 different events today and tomorrow.

Ames, Iowa – Sophomore Rebeka Neville started off the busy weekend for the Jayhawks strong in the women’s high jump, finishing fourth and clearing height of 1.57m (5-01.75ft.). This distance was just an inch away from her personal best in the event.

The men’s distance medley relay team recorded the second best time in the event for KU this season. Brendan Soucie, Derrick Perry, Josh Munsch, and Sean Proehl finished 16th with a time of 10:16.41. The women’s distance medley team took fourth with a time of 11:52.75, also marking the second best time for the KU team this season.

Redshirt sophomore Kaman Schneider recorded an eighth place finish in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 8:45.93. The mark gave him his second fastest time of his career in the event and was his second straight top 10 finish.

The best distance in the long jump for KU this season came from senior Jareb Stallbaumer, who jumped a distance of 6.91m (22-08.00ft.), finishing in 15th place. Darryl Trotter also competed in the event, placing 15th with a jump of 6.58m (21-07.25ft.).

More Jayhawks will be in the action tomorrow with highlights sure to come from the women’s sprinters Diamond Dixon and Denesha Morris and Men’s distance runners Nick Caprario and Josh Baden. Seniors Amanda Miller and Riley Wertenberger will be in action in the 5,000 meters. Miller is coming off her best time of the season in the 3,000 meters at the New Balance Invitational last week. The Jayhawks will have two men’s 4X400 meter relay teams competing as well as the women’s 4X400 team looking to continue the success they have had throughout this season.

Fayetteville, Ark. – The women’s pole vaulters were in action on Friday at the Tyson Invitational with veterans Jaci Perryman, Tara Turnbull, Abby Jones, and freshmen standout Demi Payne putting forth solid efforts in the Randal Tyson Track Center. Payne tied her personal best with a jump of 3.90m (12-09.50ft.), which was good enough to put her in eighth place in the invitational flight. Jaci Perryman was just behind her in ninth, clearing a height of 3.75m (12-03.50ft.). In the college flight Tara Turnbull finished in 13th place with a jump of 3.60m (11-09.75ft.), while Abby Jones jumped 3.45m (11-03.75ft.) which put her in 15th.

Tomorrow the men’s pole vaulters and high jumpers will be in action, trying to improve upon an impressive first half of the season. Nick Canton and Nick Giancana will be looking to improve upon their strong outing in the high jump last week in New York, both finishing in the top ten. Men’s pole vaulters Alex Bishop, Cooper Merrill, and Kevin Hays will also be looking to continue their early season success. High finishes are sure to come from Andrea Guebelle and Francine Simpson in the women’s long jump. Andrea is set to jump at 12:00pm while Francine is scheduled to begin at 7:30pm.
