Jayhawks Defeat UMKC 8-0 in Hilton Classic

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Three different Jayhawks hit home runs as the University of Kansas softball team defeated UMKC 8-0 in five innings in day two of the Hilton Classic on Saturday. Sophomore Kassie Humphreys (1-2) picked up her first win of the season as KU improved to 3-5.

KU jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Junior Nettie Fierros knocked out a two-run homer after junior Destiny Frankenstein led off with a walk. The home run was Fierros’ first of the season and ninth of her career.

Junior Jessica Moppin increased the Jayhawks’ lead to six with a grand slam in the top of the fourth. Frankenstein led the inning off with a double to left center and Fierros and Humphreys walked to load the bases.

The home run was Moppin’s second of the season and 16th of her career. She now sits in third place on the KU career home run list behind Shannon Stanwix (23) and Leah Tabb (23).

Frankenstein added a home run of her own in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Nicole Washburn led off with a double before Frankenstein blasted a hit over the left center wall. The home run was her first of the season and eighth of her career.

The game ended after five innings per the NCAA rule of an eight-run lead.Humphreys struck out two, walked one and allowed one hit in four innings of work.

Senior Kathy McVey made her first appearance of the season, striking out two and allowing one hit in the final inning of play.KU totaled eight hits in the win. With the loss, the Kangaroos fell to 0-3 on the season.

KU was also scheduled to play host New Mexico State Saturday, but the contest was cancelled due to heavy overnight rain.

The Jayhawks will conclude tournament play Sunday at noon against Utah Valley State.
