Kansas Baseball Falls to No. 6 Stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. – The University of Kansas baseball team dropped its first game of the season on Saturday falling 7-3 to No. 6 Stanford in the first game of a doubleheader at Sunken Diamond in Palo Alto, Calif.
Stanford (5-2) was able to jump out to an early lead by plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, junior first baseman John Mayberry, Jr. singled through the left side to score catcher John Hester and put the Cardinal on the board. A sacrifice fly from third baseman Adam Sorgi gave Stanford its second run of the inning.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Cardinal put another run on the scoreboard courtesy of a RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Hester.
Junior center fielder Gus Milner put Kansas on the board in the top of the fourth by slamming 1-0 offering from Stanford starter Mark Romanczuk over the wall in left field for his first home run of the season.
Stanford scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to push its advantage to 5-1. After two quick outs in the inning, Land walked Sorgi and left fielder Chris Lewis followed with his third home run of the season.
Land (0-1) struck out a career-high six in the game.
In the top of the sixth, Milner again took Romanczuk deep for his second home run of the game, a solo shot over the wall in left center field, to cut the Stanford lead to 5-2.
Milner finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI, while center fielder Matt Baty collected a team-high three hits
The Cardinal tacked two runs on to their lead in the bottom of the sixth to open up a 7-2 lead.
KU attempted to rally in the top of the ninth, but could push across only one run on a RBI double by Baty.
The series continues with the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader following the conclusion of game one. The series will conclude with the final game of the series from Sunken Diamond on Sunday. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. local time (1 p.m. CST).
