HOUSTON, Texas –

In its first game of the 2010 season, the Kansas softball team could not quiet a hot Louisville offense as the Jayhawks fell 10-2 to No. 21/22 Louisville.

KU tried three different pitchers during the contest as Louisville

Louisville got off to a strong start collecting five runs off five hits in its first at-bat.

Kansas was unable to respond until the top of the third inning when Liz Kocon hit a sacrifice fly to score freshman Alex Jones. Jones led off the inning with her first career hit, a single that ricocheted of f the pitcher’s glove. She stole then stole second base and moved onto third after back-to-back walks to Sara Ramirez and Amanda Jobe.

Louisville answered back with another strong inning in the third. The Cardinals hit a trio of singles and earned two walks to plate four more runs and then added one more tally to the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 10-1.

In order to prevent a run-rule, KU needed to close the margin to less than eight runs. Jones led off in the top of the fifth inning with a double to the left field fence for her second hit of the contest. Ramirez stepped up to the plate next and advanced Jones with a single to shallow center field. Jobe finally plated Jones with a single that bounced off the first baseman’s glove into foul territory to bring the score to 10-2.

Unfortunatekly the rally ended short for the Jayhawks as Louisville putout Kansas’ next two batters, stranding Ramirez on third.
