Jayhawks Set to Open Spring Campaign at Rice Intercollegiate

Feb. 12, 2010

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

The Kansas men’s golf team will open the spring portion of its 2009-10 season when they travel to Houston, Texas to compete in the Rice Intercollegiate at Westwood Golf Club (par 72, 7,184 yards) Feb. 15-16.

The Jayhawks enjoyed a successful fall season with three top-three team finishes.

“We are just excited to get back out on the road and have the chance to compete and play tournament golf again,” said head coach Kit Grove. “The guys have been working hard in our new facilities to try and overcome the cold weather outside and get off to a quicker start than we have in years past in the spring season.”

Much of the fall success for KU can be attributed to the strong play of junior Nate Barbee. The Dakota Dunes, S.D. native, recorded four top-10 finishes and finished with a scoring average of 71.29.

Barbee will be joined in Coach Grove’s lineup by senior Bryan Hackenberg, junior Jeff Bell, and freshmen Chris Gilbert and Alex Gutesha.

The 16-team field will play 36 holes on Monday, February 15, followed by the final round on Tuesday, February 16.

The Jayhawks won the inaugural Rice Intercollegiate in 2001. Pacific returns to this year’s event as defending champions.
