Orlando, Fla. – Kansas’ women’s golf finished the first round of the UCF Challenge in 16th place with a score of 306 at the Redtail Golf Club in Orlando, Fla., Sunday. Tee times were delayed half an hour due to potential frost.

Senior Katy Nugent led the way for the Jayhawks with a round of 74 to finish tied for 32nd place among individuals while sophomore Thanuttra Boonraksasat shot 76 and is tied for 60th through the first round.

Sophomore Meghan Potee and freshman Michelle Woods both shot 78 and are tied for 80th. Junior Audrey Yowell shot 85 and finished in a tie for 98th after round one while Gabriella DiMarco carded an 80 and is currently in a tie for 89th.

“Most of the team got off to a rough start on our first nine holes,” head coach Erin O’Neil said. “They were able to regroup well on the back-nine by shooting three-under as a team. We have the ability to score, but we aren’t putting the pieces together for the entire round like we are capable of doing.”

After a bumpy front nine, Boonraksasat came striking back with three birdies and six pars on the back nine, shaving 10 strokes off her score. Potee also improved her back-nine score by 10 strokes with two birdies and seven pars.

“I’m very pleased with how our senior Katy Nugent played today as she led the way with a 74,” coach O’Neil said. “Considering our slow start we are only seven shots out of 10th in a strong tournament field. Hopefully we can take what we learned today and move up in the standings the next two rounds.”

Baylor leads the tournament following the first round Sunday with a score of 284. Second place Auburn is just one stroke behind with a 285, while Augusta State stands in third place with a 286. Baylor’s Hayley Davis and Auburn’s Victoria Trapani lead all individuals with a first round score of 68.

Second-round action continues Monday, followed by the final 18 holes of competition to take place on Tuesday. Live stats will be available on www.golfstat.com.
