Kansas Tennis Rolls Past Illinois State, 5-2

LAWRENCE, Kan.–Four Jayhawks scored singles victories in the Kansas women’s tennis team’s 5-2 win over the Illinois State Redbirds Sunday at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. KU improved to 3-0 in dual competition while ISU dropped to 2-3 for the spring season.
Sophomore Paulina Los came from two games down in the first set and one in the second to defeat ISU’s Phyllis Tigges, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot and secure the first singles point for the Jayhawks.
At No. 5, sophomore Claire Dreyer took down Gabby Phillips, 6-2, 6-3, to remain undefeated during the spring campaign. Newcomer Maria Belen Ludueña also stays undefeated after routing Carolina Abello at the No. 4 position, 6-4, 6-3 and clinching the victory for the Jayhawks.
After the match had already been decided at 4-2, junior Victoria Khanevskaya won an eight-game pro set against Hannah Esker, 9-8(6).
In doubles competition, Khanevskaya and Dreyer dominated at the No. 3 spot, while Ludueña and sophomore Dylan Windom claimed a win at No. 1.
Kansas will continue its five-meet homestand next weekend when the Jayhawks play host to Bradley on Saturday and Arkansas-Little Rock on Sunday at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. Both duals are set to begin at 11 a.m. and are free and open to the public.
