Overland Park, Kan. – The University of Kansas tennis team was defeated by the No. 14 Texas Longhorns, 7-0, Sunday, at the Overland Park Racquet Club, in Overland Park, Kan. The loss drops the `Hawks to 1-4 on the season and 0-1 in the Big 12.

The Jayhawks fought hard in doubles competition and earned one victory. The duo of junior Christine Skoda and sophomore Ashley Filberth downed the `Horns Mia Marovic and Ristine Olson, 8-6. Junior Luiza Loureiro and freshman Elizaveta Avdeeva dropped a tough match to Courtney Zauft and Kelly Baritot, 8-5.

“I thought our doubles teams really stepped up today,” Kansas head coach Amy Hall-Holt said. “We played well with our new doubles lineup.”

In singles action, the Jayhawks were swept by the Longhorns. Sophomore Brittany Brown came up short against Texas’ Courtney Zauft, as she fell, 6-3, 7-6 (5). In number one singles play, the Longhorns’ Kendra Strohm, ranked 59th in the country, defeated Avdeeva from KU, 6-1, 6-2.

“The girls now know how well we must play if we want to compete against the top teams in the country,” Hall-Holt added. “I was happy with how Brittany (Brown) and Christine (Skoda) competed and I hope that they will be able to keep up their level of competition.”

Kansas next heads to University Park, Pa., for a match against Penn State on Friday, Feb. 18. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
