Sultanova Honored as Big 12's Co-Female Athlete of the Week

Feb. 13, 2007

Junior Kate Sultanova was named the Big 12’s Co-Female Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week for her performance at the Tyson Invitational Friday, Feb. 9, in Fayetteville, Ark. At the meet, Sultanova became only the second female collegian to clear 14 feet in the women’s pole vault during the indoor season with a career-best vault of 14-00.25 feet, good for second place.

“I am very proud of what I have accomplished,” Sultanova said. “I have been working very hard this season and clearing that height is only one of my goals for the remainder of the season.” Sultanova shared the recognition with Texas’ Desitnee Hooker, who cleared 6-05 feet in the high jump also at the Tyson Invitational.

The recognition is a first for Sultanova, who currently sits atop the Big 12 Conference performance list with teammate freshman Britany Parker currently in third. She also ranks second in Division I this year with her performance and second on KU’s career indoor performance list, trailing only former national champion, Amy Linnen (14-01.25 feet).

She was also recognized as the Big 12’s Outdoor Newcomer of the Year in 2005 for her winning performance in the pole vault at the Outdoor Championships and was a 2005 All-American in the event with a seventh-place finish at the 2005 NCAA Championships.

Sultanova will look to continue her success on Feb. 23-24 at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in Ames, Iowa.
