Swimming and Diving Takes On Big 12 Championships

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Kansas swimming and diving team will head to College Station, Texas, for the Big 12 Conference Championships Wednesday, Feb. 14, through Saturday, Feb. 17. Competition will commence at the Student Recreation Center Natatorium on the Texas A&M campus with prelims beginning at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 6 p.m. each day.
The 2007 Big 12 Championships will be hosted by Texas A&M for the sixth time in Big 12 history. The Aggies have hosted the six Big 12 women’s teams on four occasions: 1997, 2000, 2002 and 2005 and the three Big 12 men’s teams in 1997-98. The new Student Rec Center Natatorium facility opened in 2005.
The Jayhawks finished dual meet season on Jan. 27 with a home meet victory against Big 12 rival Iowa State, 192.5-103.5. The Conference win brought Kansas to 6-1 in dual meet competition on the season and 2-1 in Big 12 competition, its only loss to the Missouri Tigers on Oct. 27.
In addition to participating in two invitational meets this season, the Terrapin Cup in College Park, Md., and the Nike Cup-Kenyon Invitational in Gambier, Ohio, Kansas hosted two-day meets against Northern Iowa and Iowa State. The two-day meets served the purpose of preparing Kansas to race multiple times in a two-day span just like the Big 12 Championships.
At the 2006 Big 12 Championships in Columbia, Mo., the Jayhawks placed fourth behind the eight-time champion Texas Longhorns, Texas A&M and Missouri. The margin between the Jayhawks and the third-place Tigers was a narrow 14 points.
