Kansas Tennis Heads East for Weekend Double-Header
Feb. 13, 2013
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Kansas women’s tennis team looks to rebound from its first loss of the season with a weekend trip to Charleston, S.C., for matches against Charleston Southern and No. 67-ranked College of Charleston.
The Jayhawks will face Charleston Southern Friday at 2 p.m. ET, while their match against College of Charleston is set for 10 a.m. on Saturday. Kansas currently sits at 2-1 after losing to then-No. 23 Tulsa on Sunday, 5-2, and a pair of victories over Denver and St. Louis two weeks ago.
“We definitely feel like we’re a team that’s going in the right direction,” coach Amy Hall-Holt said. “Every loss is disappointing, but I think that we’re right there against some of the top players in the nation.”
Charleston Southern owns a 1-1 dual record in 2013 with a 6-1 victory over South Carolina State and a 5-2 loss at Stetson to start the year. The Buccaneers, who play in the Big South Conference, scheduled nine of their first 11 matches this season at home.
College of Charleston is currently 2-1 this season, with its only loss coming on Jan. 26 to No. 60 Wyoming, 4-1, at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Tournament in Durham, N.C. The Cougars bounced back immediately with a 4-2 victory over No. 74 Wisconsin the following day.
A successful program in recent years, College of Charleston boasts Southern Conference titles and NCAA Tournament appearances in each of the last four seasons.
Kansas played four juniors in its first two matches of the season before No. 1 singles player Haley Fournier was sidelined by an undisclosed injury midway through Sunday’s match against Tulsa. After the match, Hall-Holt said she expected Fournier’s health to improve quickly and that her status was day-to-day.
Junior Claire Dreyer holds the Jayhawks’ best singles record this season, entering this weekend’s competition a combined 15-2 between fall and spring play. The No. 1 doubles duo for KU–junior Dylan Windom and freshman Maria Jose Cardona–is currently 4-2 this spring and 2-1 against dual-match opponents.
