Geubelle Earns Second Big 12 Athlete of the Week Honor of 2012
Feb. 14, 2012
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas junior Andrea Geubelle was named Female Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this season after performances in the triple jump and long jump that rank in the top 15 nationally at the Husky Classic in Seattle last weekend.
Geubelle (Goo-bell), a five-time All-American and native of University Place, Wash., put on quite a show Saturday afternoon in front of friends and family in the return to her home state. The junior started the meet with a runner-up finish in the long jump, hitting an indoor personal-best mark of 6.23 meters (20-05.25 ft.). The distance is the second-best mark in the conference this year and ranks 12th nationally.
Geubelle then collected her third victory of the year in the triple jump, once again notching a personal record with a top leap of 13.28 meters (43-07 ft.). The mark put her at No. 2 in the nation in 2012 and is less than an inch away from the NCAA automatic qualifying mark.
The junior was named the Big 12 Athlete of the Week on Jan. 17 after winning both the long and triple jump competitions at the Kansas vs. Missouri Dual meet Jan. 13. She becomes just the second KU track and field athlete to take home multiple Big 12 Athlete of the Week awards in a single season. Former All-American pole vaulter Kate Sultanova (2005-08) claimed the distinction in back-to-back weeks in 2008.
Kansas athletes have now been named to the conference athlete of the week list three of the five weeks of the 2012 indoor season. In addition to Geubelle on Jan. 17, Diamond Dixon claimed her second career Big 12 athlete of the week honor on Jan. 31 after notching the nation’s fastest 400-meter time to date. It marked the second time in league history that KU has claimed the Female Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week accolade three times in one year.
Geubelle and the rest of the No. 6-ranked women’s team travel to College Station, Texas for the 2012 Big 12 Indoor Championships Feb. 24-25. The Jayhawks will have 26 men and women competing on both sides hoping to bring the Jayhawks their first Big 12 Conference championship.
