KU Women's Golf to Open Spring Competition in Miami

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

After four months off, the <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>University of Kansas women’s golf team will leave the cold weather behind to begin its spring season at the Qdoba Invitational, Feb. 17-19. Hosted by the University of Miami, the three-day event will take place at the par 72 Don Shula Golf Course (6,210 yards) in Miami Lakes, Fla. Eleven of the 12 teams in the field are listed in GolfStat’s top-100, including Virginia (No. 22), defending champion Louisville (No. 26), East Carolina (No. 32) and San Jose State (No. 35).<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Senior Annie Giangrosso, sophomores Meghan Gockel and Emily Powers and freshmen Meghna Bal and Grace Thiry will be representing the Jayhawks during competition. Sophomore Camilla Svensson will also be competing as an individual. Giangrosso, Powers and Bal played in all 5 events during the fall season. Powers led the Jayhawks with a 74.36 scoring average. Bal and Giangrosso each owned a 76.86 average on the season.

The twelve-team field includes Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Kentucky, Louisville, Miami, Mississippi State, New Mexico State, San Jose State, South Florida, Southern Mississippi, Virginia.

“We are looking forward to going down to Miami,” head coach Erin O’Neil said. “I think it will be a good tournament for us to start the spring season. Our goal is to go out and play with no expectations every round and to get the most out of each shot. Our mental game will be our most important asset this week. We had a solid fall and hopefully we can continue to build on that and have a great spring.”
