Vertelka Holds Down Oregon To Help KU To 6-1 Win

LAS VEGAS, Nev. –

Sophomore pitcher Sarah Vertelka limited Oregon to just three hits in 7.0 innings of work, while senior Betsy Wilson hit the first home run of her career to help Kansas softball to a 6-1 victory over the Ducks during the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

With the win, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Kansas improves to 5-1 on the season and 1-0 during this weekend’s tournament. Oregon meanwhile drops to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the tournament.

Vertelka turned in another impressive performance from the circle improving to 4-0 this season. The hurler threw her second complete game of the year striking out six batters and allowing her first earned run in 27.1 innings.

Nine Jayhawks scattered 11 hits throughout the game including RBI swings from Wilson, juniors Elle Pottorf and Val Chapple and sophomores Sara Ramirez and Amanda Jobe.

KU will play again today at approximately 5 p.m. (CST) against PortlandState.
