Stanton And Hile Homer As KU Edges Portland State, 3-2

Sophomore Ally Stanton and freshman Brittany Hile each sent pitches over the fence to help <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Kansas edge PortlandState 3-2 here Friday afternoon during the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

KU extends its winning streak to four games despite being out-hit 7-4 as they improve to 7-1 overall, while PortlandState falls to 2-4.

Kansas jumped out to an early lead in the second inning on a two-run homer from Hile, her first collegiate homer. Stanton helped extend the Jayhawks’ lead by one more with a home run of her own to lead off the fifth. Stanton was the third Jayhawk of the day to record the first home run of her college career.

Portland State threatened in the top of the sixth scoring two runs on four hits. Freshman Allie Clark entered the pitcher’s circle for junior Val George and ended the inning with a ground out and a strikeout to strand the Vikings’ tying and winning runs on third and first, respectively.

George improved her pitching record to 2-0, while Clark tabbed the team’s first save of the year.

Kansas is back in action tomorrow morning against BYU at 11 a.m. (CST).
