ORLANDO, Fla. –

Senior pitcher Val George tossed a one-hitter while the Kansas softball offense erupted for nine runs off nine hits as KU defeated Bowling Green 9-0 in five innings to conclude the UCF Early Bird Tournament here Sunday afternoon.

George recorded seven strikeouts as she evened her record to 3-3 from the pitcher’s circle, while Kansas improved to 4-5 overall on the season and the Falcons fell to 3-2.

The Jayhawks scored three runs in the first three innings before pulling away with five runs on four hits in the top of fourth.

Junior Amanda Jobe started the inning off with a single through the right side and was immediately brought home thanks to an RBI double from sophomore Liz Kocon. Kocon advanced to third after an illegal pitch by the Falcons and junior Sara Ramirez joined Kocon on base with a walk. Sophomore Kolby Fesmire loaded the bases for the Jayhawks as she also earned a base on balls.

Senior Stevie Crisosto then stepped up to the plate and batted in Kocon and Ramirez with a hard hit double down the right field line.

Dougie McCaulley, also a senior, helped score Fesmire with an RBI single up the middle. Before the inning was over, McCaulley worked her way over to third base and eventually scored, taking advantage of a wild pitch by Bowling Green.

Leah Daiber brought in the team’s final run in the top of the fifth inning. The freshman catcher made her first appearance of the season a memorable one with a hit to the right field fence as she made it to second while bringing Sara Ramirez across home plate. Ramirez ran for sophomore Allie Clark, who pinch hit for Ramirez, and reached base on a double through the third baseman’s legs for her first hit of the year.

McCaulley led the Jayhawks with a 3-for-3 outing at the plate and added three runs and two RBIs. Kocon also had a multi-hit game going 2-for-2 in the batter’s box.

Kansas softball will return to the diamond next weekend, Feb. 19-22, for the Cathedral City Classic in Palm Springs, Calif
