Kansas Baseball Defeats South Dakota State in Home Opener

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Junior first baseman Jared Schweitzer went 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBI to lead the University of Kansas baseball team to an 8-2 victory over South Dakota State in the team’s home opener at Hoglund Ballpark on Wednesday.

Kansas (7-3) took an early lead in the ball game, scoring twice in the top of the first inning on a RBI double by junior shortstop Ritchie Price and a RBI single off the bat of senior catcher Sean Richardson.

The Jayhawks added three in the bottom of the second inning to open a 5-0 lead. Junior outfielder Matt Baty drove in his 11th run of the season with a single and Schweitzer drove in two more with a two-run double down the left field line in the next at bat.

Ritchie Price drove in his second run of the ball game in the fourth inning as he hit a sacrifice fly to plate freshman Erik Morrison and give the Jayhawks a 6-0 advantage.

Morrison finished the contest 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored.

Kansas added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single off the bat of Schweitzer.
