Jayhawks To Host Annual Pink Zone Game Sunday February 22

Feb. 16, 2009

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas women’s basketball and Kansas Athletics will work to raise awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer when it takes part in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s (WBCA) “Pink Zone” initiative on Sunday, February 22. Kansas will play host to Iowa State at Noon in a game that will see the Jayhawks dress in pink and blue uniforms in an effort to raise breast cancer awareness.

The “Pink Zone” initiative is a global, unified effort to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. In just its third year, the initiative has grown to 1,500 participating schools nationwide.

Kansas Athletics will donate $1 for every fan in attendance with the money being divided between Lawrence Memorial Hospital and the University of Kansas Cancer Center. The donations will go towards supporting breast cancer treatment and research. In addition, the first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a free pink t-shirt courtesy of Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

“Not only is this a huge game on our schedule, but its an opportunity for us to join in the effort to create awareness, educate and raise money to help fight breast cancer,” said Kansas head coach Bonnie Henrickson, who will be donating an additional $1 out of her own pocket for each KU student in attendance.

The WBCA began the WBCA Pink Zone, formerly known as “Think Pink”, in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women’s basketball, on campuses and in communities. In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year a success. In 2008, over 1,100 teams and organizations participated, reaching over 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research. Kansas Athletics donated $6,122 last season as the Jayhawks defeated Nebraska.
