Off its best start in 13 years, the University of Kansas softball team will look to extend its 5-0 start when it takes part in the Stetson Hatter Invitational this weekend, Feb. 18-20, in Deland, Fla. The Jayhawks will face South Dakota State (0-2), Bethune-Cookman (1-4) and Stetson (1-3) over the three-day tournament. KU won the Jacksonville University Tournament in its opening weekend last week, which included an upset of No. 25 North Carolina, as the team got off to its best start since 1998.

Kansas has five home runs in its first five games all from different players, including grand slams from junior Marissa Ingle and sophomore Maggie Hull- her first career home run. Freshman Ashley Newman leads the Jayhawk offense after the first weekend of play batting .500 (7-for-14) and also has a team-high five stolen bases. Sophomore Alex Jones is currently riding a five-game hitting streak and is second to Newman batting .357. Ingle (.308) paces all players with six RBIs. She also shined on defense making spectacular plays all weekend long from third base and going errorless in 24 chances from the field.

Freshman Kristin Martinez got her college career off to a great start as she leads Kansas’ pitchers with a 0.46 ERA. She recorded three of KU’s victories and also picked up a save versus UNC. Martinez boasts a team-high nine strikeouts in 15.1 innings of work.
