Jayhawks Defeat Jacksonville, 10-2

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Kansas softball scored a season-high 10 runs in defeating Jacksonville, 10-2, in five innings Saturday afternoon at the Sunshine State Tournament. The Jayhawks moved to 4-3-1 overall and with a win over Memphis Saturday evening, could win the tournament title outright.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

The Jayhawks struck early in their first game of the day, scoring two runs on a pair of walks and sacrifice hits in the top of the first. Jacksonville answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, but KU blew the game open with seven runs in the third. The Jayhawks totaled four hits and four walks in the 10-batter inning.

Freshman Sara Ramirez added to KU’s lead (10-1) in the fourth with her second home run of the season, a solo blast over the left field wall. Ramirez finished the game with two hits and two RBI. Sophomore Dougie McCaulley’s double earned her a game-high three RBI in addition to her three stolen bases. Freshman Amanda Jobe went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Freshman Sarah Vertelka (1-1) allowed six hits, including just one extra-base knock, struck out three and walked one in five innings for her first career victory. KU totaled seven hits and stranded just two runners on base in the win.

JU’s Katie Buell (1-3) struck out four and walked six Jayhawks to take the loss for the Dolphins (2-7).
